Replacing tire pressure sensor

2024-05-23

Tire pressure sensor is an intelligent device that can monitor the tire pressure of car tires. It can monitor the tire pressure situation in real time and transmit the data to the vehicle's information system, providing timely feedback on tire pressure status for drivers. In addition to its application in automotive safety, tire pressure sensors can also play an important role in energy conservation and environmental protection. When the tire pressure is insufficient, the car's fuel consumption will increase, and it will accelerate tire wear, thereby increasing the maintenance cost of the car. By monitoring tire pressure in a timely manner and adjusting it, the car's fuel consumption and tire wear can be effectively reduced, achieving energy-saving and environmental protection effects.

In practical automotive applications, tire pressure sensors have become standard for many automobile manufacturers. Many high-end automobile brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, etc., have tire pressure sensors as a standard configuration, and some emerging automobile brands have gradually begun to use tire pressure sensors as a basic configuration. In addition, some automotive aftermarket also began to introduce tire pressure sensor products for different models to meet consumer needs.

So when the tire pressure sensor doesn't work, how do we replace it ourselves?

The following are the basic steps for replacing tire pressure sensors:

1. Preparation work

Ensure that the vehicle is in a safe position, turn off the engine and apply the handbrake. Prepare the necessary tools, including wrenches, screwdrivers, tire pressure sensor scanners, etc.

2. Positioning sensor

Based on the vehicle model and tire position, determine the location of the tire pressure sensor that needs to be replaced. The sensor is usually located on or near the wheel hub. Please refer to the vehicle's maintenance manual for specific locations.

3. Remove the tire

Before removing the tire, hit it to the lowest pressure level it is to monitor (for example, zero pressure if the sensor is located in the hub) to protect the hub from damage.

Use a jack to lift the vehicle and then remove the tire where the sensor needs to be replaced. If you are using a pneumatic jack, remember to secure the vehicle before lowering the jack.

4. Remove the old tire pressure sensor and install a new one

The tire pressure sensor may be a bolt, a clamp, or a device soldered directly to the hub. Depending on your sensor type, use the appropriate tool to disassemble it; Install the new sensor in its original position. Make sure the new sensor is in the same position, orientation and Angle as the old sensor. If necessary, use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts according to the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications.

5. Install the tire

Install the tire back to its original position and tighten the screws with a wrench. Lower the vehicle and ensure that the tires are in contact with the ground.

6. Reset the sensor

Use a tire pressure sensor scanner to reset the newly installed sensor to ensure that the vehicle system can correctly recognize the new sensor. According to the vehicle manual or manufacturer's guidance, perform the corresponding reset operation.

7. Check and test

Start the vehicle, check whether the tire pressure sensor is working properly, use the tire pressure gauge to check the tire pressure, and ensure that the sensor reading is accurate.

Precautions for replacing tire pressure sensor:

①When replacing the sensor, be careful to avoid damaging the sensor or tire.

②Make sure you use the right tools to avoid unnecessary damage or injury.

After replacing the sensor, be sure to reset the operation to ensure that the vehicle system can correctly identify the new sensor.

In short, replacing tire pressure sensors requires certain professional knowledge and skills. If unsure about the operation, it is recommended to seek professional assistance.
